What is Lean Coffee?
Lean Coffee is a simple yet powerful meeting facilitation technique that fosters structured, engaging discussions without the constraints of a predetermined agenda. Instead of a single meeting leader, attendees collaboratively shape the conversation by proposing topics and voting to prioritize them. This democratic approach ensures that discussions are relevant, time is used effectively, and every voice—especially those of introverts—is heard.
At CLN, we review “lean in the news” a selection of recent white papers to see what Lean Management papers have been published in the last 15-30 days. This keeps practitioners up-to-date and relevant.
Where Did Lean Coffee Start?
Lean Coffee originated in Seattle in 2009, when Lean coaches Jim Benson and Jeremy Lightsmith sought a way to explore Lean principles without the rigid structures of traditional meetings. According to the official Lean Coffee website, they wanted a format that didn’t rely on committees or speakers—just a shared desire to learn, collaborate, and innovate.
