COVID’s Impact on Process Improvement, Expert Panel Discussion (Thursday, August 20th)


Hear from PI Leaders across multiple industries about how COVID-19 has impacted the process improvement efforts at their organizations.

This is a panel discussion with process improvement leaders focused on how COVID has impacted process improvement efforts at various organizations. The panel will inspire us by sharing success stories, lessons learned and answering questions from the audience.

PANELIST BIOS

Gary Vansuch is Director of Process Improvement for the Colorado Department of Transportation (also known as “CDOT”). As a member of the CDOT top executive team, Gary directs efforts to improve the organization’s operations and to make government more effective, efficient and elegant. He has over 40 years of business improvement and change leadership experience in the energy, financial services and governmental services sectors. Gary is a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt and a Certified Change Management Practitioner and Facilitator. Additionally, Gary served 6 years with the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award program, including 4 years as a Senior Examiner and as a member of the national Case Study Development Team. He has also been a Judge for the International Team Excellence Awards, and a Judge for the RIT / USA Quality Cup competition for improvement teams.”

Maren Moorehead is the Interim Deputy Director for the Colorado State Lab, in the Department of Public Health and Environment. Maren was assigned as the project manager to help increase COVID-19 testing capacity at the lab. Prior to this position, Maren worked as a Process Improvement Consultant within Disease Control and Public Health Response. She earned her MBA from the University of Denver.

Jeremy Lee, MNM, MPH: As the Assistant Director of Lean Systems Improvement (LSI) at Denver Health, Jeremy manages operations of the LSI team and the Denver Health Lean Academy. He has many years of experience providing lean process improvement coaching, team facilitation, and curriculum development and instruction. Prior to Denver Health, he spent 10 years in higher education administration at Regis University. In this capacity, Jeremy directed the health professions service learning programs, developed and led multiple intercultural and global service programs, and taught a graduate level course on global health. His passion for healthcare was sparked when he served two years in Peace Corps Ecuador as a health education volunteer. Jeremy has a B.A. in Organizational Communications, a Masters in Nonprofit Management, and a Master of Public Health with an emphasis on Health Care Systems, Management, and Policy. In his free time, Jeremy enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, playing guitar, skiing, and trying to stay young by doing mountain triathlons.

Melissa Wiley is the Director of Denver Peak Academy, the City and County of Denver’s process improvement and analytics team. Prior to working for Peak, Melissa worked for the US Department of State, a US economic envoy to Northern Ireland, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, various nonprofits, and a public policy consulting firm. She specializes in leading innovative and data driven teams. She holds a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Pennsylvania’s Fels and Wharton schools.

Derek Killebrew is the Private Sector Liaison and Resource Analyst overseeing the Business Emergency Operations Center for The Office of Emergency Management. As the Private Sector Liaison, Derek directs efforts to increase engagement and improve coordination between the public and private sectors to better facilitate recovery operations and increase resiliency within private sector critical infrastructure. Derek has spent the majority of his career in the private sector and has used this experience to work towards strengthening public/private partnerships. Derek holds an MBA and is a Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt.

Beth Andreoli is a director of transformation for the Governor’s Office of Performance through Excellence (OPE) in Pennsylvania. She is responsible for assisting the public safety agencies implement and sustain Lean processes. Beth received a Bachelor of Science degree in administration of justice from Pennsylvania State University. Beth has been with the commonwealth since 2007 and worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Insurance in various roles. She was part of the department’s training committee in an effort to identify educational and training opportunities for employees. She was one of the department’s Lean ninjas and has a strong interest in making government work better. The Lean Initiative is of particular interest to Beth because it empowers employees to improve the work they do every day. She enjoys training facilitation, meeting people from various agencies, and learning how each agency impacts the lives of Pennsylvanians. Beth secured the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Associate Professional in Insurance Regulation designation, is certified in Change Management, has secured a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Academic Certificate, and is a Lean Ninja Green Belt through the Commonwealth’s Lean certification program.

Lynn Bailey is the State Training Officer and Training & Exercise Program Manager for the Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. She has been with the Division since January 2014. Bailey and her team provide support, coordination, and facilitation of emergency management and homeland security training and exercise events for the State’s emergency managers and first responders. The COVID-19 pandemic has created opportunities to revisit the way DHSEM provides training to its stakeholders. Currently, Bailey is considering how DHSEM can utilize technology to provide realistic, adaptive and competency-based training and comprehensive exercise development and support. Processes and procedures are also being reviewed while course delivery is suspended in the state. Bailey holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Chadron State College and a Master of Science Degree in Organizational Leadership with a specialization in Strategic Innovation and Change Management from Colorado State University.
